Facts about Barbados

The Island of Barbados was first settled by the British in 1627. The economy was heavily dependent on sugar, rum, and molasses production through most of the 20th century, and in the 1990s, tourism and manufacturing surpassed the sugar industry in economic importance.

The capital of Barbados is Bridgetown, the official language is English, and it has a parliamentary democracy as an independent sovereign state within the Commonwealth. The population of Barbados is less than 300,000, and it has a tropical climate.

Currency

The official currency is the Barbados Dollar, which can be exchanged at approximately 2:1 with the US Dollar.

Size

The total area of Barbados is 431 square kilometers (267 miles), and the coastline is 97 kilometers (60 miles), an area approximagely two and a half times the size of Washington, DC.
